There are 13 bridges in Hackney Wick and Fish Island and the ongoing development of the Overground Station by VolkerFitzpatrick will create an underpass linking White Post Lane to the South and Wallis Road to the North, in effect putting the railway line above on another bridge.
The Building Bridges project took place in the summer of 2017 and saw a series of 5 workshops delivered to Gainsborough Primary School’s Year 6 pupils that were designed to expose them to possible career opportunities in the architecture, design and construction sectors. Workshops were delivered by Creative Wick, VolkerFitzpatrick and artists and architects from Hackney Wick and Fish Island.
Each workshop followed a theme with pupils first learning about the role of art and design in the construction process, the purpose and roles of different bridge types and how the landscape and environment in which they sit can influence their design.
Pupils were then asked to design and build a model bridge for an exhibition that took place at the school at the end of term.
Pupils were also taught about the ways in which new technology is being used in the design and construction process and in particular how to use SketchUp modelling software to create 3D digital models of their bridge design.
On Tuesday 11th July their bridge models were then exhibited to school friends, family and teachers during an event at Gainsborough Primary School.
